Bulgaria's entry into the European Union (EU) will further boost the prosperity of the bloc, Bulgarian Prime Minister Sergey Stanishev said in an interview for the Parliament Magazine.
Our January 1, 2007 membership is among the major issues on the agenda of the government that I head as well as on the agenda of the majority of the Bulgarian citizens - all institutions work hard to meet the criteria and make efforts for the benefit of the achievement of this national goal, Stanishev said in an article published by the magazine of the European Parliament.
Stanishev pointed out that despite some difficulties in the integration process, Bulgaria has its undeniably European character and a stable model of society. Its return to the big European family is in line with the logic of the reconstruction of the European continent after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Being stable in political terms, with qualified workforce and modern legislative framework, Bulgaria is a favourable investment destination, the prime minister commented.
"This is the ninth year in a row that the Bulgarian economy records steady annual growth of 5 or 6%, which is twice the pace of the European economy! Our forthcoming membership will further enhance the economic stability and security of local and foreign investors, which gives them considerable advantage in global competition, Stanishev said.
He highlighted that Bulgaria is perseveringly implementing productive reforms in almost all public areas, some of which arouse the EU's concern and mostly the fight against corruption and organised crime.
Bulgaria has covered the difficult path of reforms for the last 16 years, but namely thanks to them, today we are much more prepared to face the challenges of globalisation and other processes of transformation. We have the will, energy and enthusiasm to contribute to EU's transformation into the most successful project not only in the 20th but also in 21st century, the Prime Minister summed up.
