Sofia Mayor Boyko Borisov sent an official letter to the Chief Bulgarian mufti Mustafa Alish Haji insisting that Sofia Municipality Order N1 should be kept, news agencies reported.
The document concerns the public order and the preservation of the municipal property, officials added.
Sofia Municipality has received signals from residents in the central city part where the Banya Basha mosque is situated, the letter said. Local people have complained about the levels of the noise that appear when the mosque summons Muslims for prayer, Borisov said.
“I ask you to take the necessary measures in order to low down the loudspeakers so that non-Muslims residents won’t be bothered, Borisov has written. Sofia supports the constitutional right of the different religious communities in Bulgaria to perform their rituals, Borisov said. Together with that the municipality is obliged to take care for preserving public order and citizens’ quietness, he added.
There has been a subscription in front of the mosque, initiated by the ultra-nationalist Ataka party. Their data showed that about 20,000 have supported the idea of stopping the loudspeakers.
