Dimitar Penev will take over as head coach of the Bulgarian national team for the second time as he will guide the club through its remaining EURO 2008 qualifiers it was announced on Monday.
The 62-year-old Penev replaces departed manager Hristo Stoichkov, who resigned in April to take over Spanish side Celta Vigo. Levski Sofia manager Stanimir Stoilov had been chosen as caretaker manager of the team for its qualifiers last month.
In his first stint in charge of Bulgaria, Penev enjoyed a great run of success, taking the team to the semifinals of the 1994 World Cup in the United States, and then guiding the squad to qualification for EURO 96 in England.
Bulgaria is currently second in Group G after seven games with 15 points, two behind leaders Romania. Bulgaria faces a big contest on September 8 against third-placed Netherlands, who trail Bulgaria by just one point.
Penev's first match in charge of Bulgaria will come on August 22 when the team hosts Wales in a friendly.
