Nationalist movement Ataka organised today in Sofia a demonstration against the establishment of foreign military bases on Bulgarian territory. The rally started at 1 pm and ended slightly after 8 pm, BGNES news agency reported. Almost 2000 Ataka supporters took part in the protest. Party members previously said the demonstration will occur in front of the National Palace of Culture, where an informal NATO summit is taking place. Instead, Ataka supporters met in the South Park and moved to the US embassy. Ataka leader Volen Siderov failed submitting a declaration to the participants in the NATO summit. The declaration demands a national referendum before the signing of the foreign bases agreement. Foreign bases in Bulgaria would be used for attacks against other countries, Siderov said. As a result the country will become target of terrorist attacks, he said. Siderov called for new protests today. He said the Ataka declaration will be submitted to the NATO secretary general Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. |
