Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas appreciated the backing position of Bulgaria for the Palestinian cause. He thanked for Bulgria's decision to open a diplomatic representative office in Rammallah.

Abbas praised Bulgaria's positions and its acknowledgment with the Palestinian national unity government, congratulating Bulgaria on entering this year the European Union.

On his part, the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov said Bulgaria supports the efforts of Palestinian Authority in solving the economic and financial problems. "The Bulgarian position on this issue will be part of the European position", he pointed out. He also welcomed the Palestinian-Israeli contacts in particular that of between the President Abbas and Israeli premier Ehud Olmert in a hope that it will contribute in moving the peace process forward.

Earlier, the President Abbas met with the Swedish Parliament Speaker Per Westerberg in which Ababs briefed him on the harsh situation in the Paletsinian territories due to the ongoing political and aid embargo on the Palestinian people.

The meeting dealt with the kicking off a potential peace process in the middle east, leading to the establishment of a sovereign Paletsinian state within 1967 borders in particular that the Arab summit in Riyadh resurrect the Arab peace initiative sketched out in Beirut in 2002.
