Some 10% of the HIV-positive Bulgarians have been refused medical treatment from November 2005 to June 2006, according to Casper Hauser Foundation.
More than 640 Bulgarians are infected with the HIV virus, according to the Ministry of Education official statistics, cited by the foundation. The real number of those people varies from three to five times more, experts note.
Representatives of the foundation announced doctors refuse to render medical aid to HIV-positive patients. Casper Hauser Foundation sees the reason in the legislature regulating treatment of HIV-positive patients.
The treatment of those patients has to be carried out in a special room with a separate bathroom. It is very frequent that doctors use legislature as an excuse and do not provide medical service to HIV-stricken patients since there are almost no such hospital rooms available.
Some 90% of the HIV-infected Bulgarians have caught the virus via sexual intercourse. About 73% of them are between 20 and 39 years of age.
