According to the exit-poll results, the ruling Socialist Party (BSP) and new party GERB, led by the Mayor of Sofia Boyko Borisov, received very close results. The turnout, however, was very low. Only 22 per cent of the 6.7 million registered voters showed up to cast ballots for Bulgaria's first elections for the European Parliament.
A Gallup exit poll showed BSP and GERB tied at 23 per cent, ahead of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms with 18% and the National Movement for Simeon II, led by former PM with 7 per cent, the Sofia News Agency reported.
BSP is the leading partner in the coalition with the National Movement and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms. GERP is a new party, founded by the country's former top-cop, Borisov.
Again mixing in with the mainstream parties was the extreme nationalist „Ataka“ with 12 per cent. Bulgaria's 18 European deputies would join the assembly halfway through its five-year term, which expires in 2009.
