The Bulgarian Parliament voted a controversial amendment in the law for voting for MEPs which caused a fierce argument over the right to vote of ethnic turks. The Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) decided to approach the Constitutional Court.
The Bulgarian Parliament voted in favor of only allowing votes for MEPs by people who have lived in Bulgaria or another EU country member in for three months prior to the vote. Movement for Rights and Freedoms (MRF) left the plenary session and acuused the opposition and Simeon II National Movement of refusing the fundamential right to vorte of ethnic Bulgarian turks in Turkey.
The provision was supported by 111 MPs, including all the opposition, 44 MPs of the Simeon II National Movement (SNM) and three of the left. Fifty-five were against and 40 abstained.
