A ceremonious send-off was held for the fourth company-size Bulgarian contingent which will provide perimeter security at the Multi-National Force - Iraq Temporary Interview and Protection Facility (TIPF) at Camp Ashraf.
The refugee camp houses some 3,500 members of the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), an exiled Iranian opposition group interned in Iraq, who enjoy protected status under the Fourth Geneva Convention.
The ceremony was attended by the Chief of General Staff of the Bulgarian Armed Forces, General Zlatan Stoikov, the Commander of the Land Forces, Lieutenant General Ivan Dobrev, officials and family members of the servicepersons, reported BTA.
The fourth Bulgarian company, just as the previous ones, will be assigned the control of the regime established at the TIPF, ensuring internal order and securitng internal installations, General Stoikov said.
The certificate of the contingent was handed to the Senior National Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Kiril Georgiev. The fourth company is commanded by Captain Nikolai Nikolov.
This is the first contingent for Camp Ashraf to be trained in Vratsa. It consists of 153 commissioned and non-commissioned officers and soldiers, including 16 servicewomen. Training took three months. Most of the career soldiers in the contingent are from Vratsa and the area. About one-third of the company members have participated in peacekeeping missions in other countries, General Stoikov said.
