Bulgaria Closes 91 Schools Due to Shortage of Students

Bulgaria has already closed 91 schools because there weren't enough students enrolled and classes were too small, the Deputy Education Minister Kircho Atanasov said Tuesday.

The schools were closed after the municipalities they were located in, suggested it.

By the beginning of the 2007/2008 school year, the Bulgarian schools will each have a copier, a laptop and a beamer, Atanasov added. This would ensure that all 3,000 schools in the country could offer multimedia-teaching without the need of special computer labs.

Bulgaria will most likely grant the Education Ministry between EUR 25 M and Eur 30 M to create a fund for restructuring the school network. Each school would be able to apply for funding, based on projects for the resturcturing.
