Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov and Israeli President Moshe Katzav announced trade between Bulgaria and Israel in 2005 exceeded $100 million.
Sofia news agency reported on June 12 that the presidents announced the trade volume at the opening of a Bulgarian-Israeli business forum in Sofia, adding that there is still a massive trading potential between the two countries. The presidents noted that areas for increased cooperation include tourism, agriculture, pharmacy, high-tech and defense.
Addressing a forum of senior businessmen from 15 Israeli and 80 Bulgarian companies Parvanov said, "Bulgaria and Israel have good traditions in cooperating in spheres as agriculture, food industry, tourism ... but there are many other opportunities." He added that Bulgaria's entry into the European Union on January 1, 2007, provides an additional impetus for increasing Israeli investment in his country.
During Katsav's visit Bulgarian and Israeli government officials signed an agreement scrapping visas for travel between the two countries, which will be implemented later this year.
During his visit Katzav and his wife visited Sofia's synagogue in Sofia, where they met representatives of the Bulgarian Jewish community.
